Nestled along the Illinois River, Marseilles possesses both small town charm and natural scenic beauty. Illini State Park is a 510 acre park bordered by the Great Falls of the Illinois River. Here, in a two mile span, the river drops creating beautiful roaring rapids. Thanks to the Illinois River Lock, a bypass constructed by the US Army Corp of Engineers, visitors are in the unique position to enjoy the picturesque rapids and watch boats and barges pass by in the same location. Illini State Park is the perfect place to enjoy camping, boating, walking trails, biking, snowmobiling, and cross country skiing. Also located in the park is the Illinois Fallen Soldiers Tree Memorial comprised of 250 oak trees – a moving memorial to Illinois soldiers lost in Iraq and Afghanistan. A town which vows to honor the sacrifice of servicemen and women, Marseilles is home to the Middle East Conflicts Memorial Wall. Updated bi-annually, this is the only memorial in the U.S. dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Middle East Wars – 6,400 names are currently etched into 11 granite panels. In Downtown Marseilles, you’ll find an array of shopping, dining and entertainment. Stroll the brand new Riverwalk and take in the scenery along the river or visit for any of the special events including eagle watching, car shows, music in the park, farmer’s markets and festivals. The Chamber of Commerce is eager to get you on your way to exploring Marseilles – you’ll find them in the little red caboose (yes, a train!) on Washington Street.
