True to its name, Coal City started as a town which sprung up around the burgeoning coal mine industry in the 1870's. Supply stores, owned by mining companies, provided goods and services to the workers and eventually the town grew to include such amenities as the Coalfield Hotel and an opera house which still stands today. Coal City proudly retains it small town charm with festivals and events for all to enjoy. Admire fine automobiles of a bygone era at Coal City’s annual Cruise Night in June or enjoy a Summer Concert in the Park including Evolution of Music in August where every era of music beginning with the 1930s will be showcased from the afternoon into evening. September brings antiques & bargain hunters alike for the Citywide Garage Sale. The season rounds out with the annual fall Oktoberfest celebration which can be described as one jubilant hometown party in the streets. Make sure to stop by Angels of Hope Memorial Park in Campbell Park - a heartfelt symbol of hope for those suffering from the loss or absence of a child. Nearby recreation areas, including Coal City Area Club, offer year-round activities such as camping, fishing, boating, swimming, scuba diving, hunting, trap shooting, ice fishing and snowmobiling.
