"Born Yesterday"
Now - Feb. 24, 2019 , Friday/Saturday 7:30PM, Sunday 2:00PM
This play is being directed by Suzanne Kaspar. Performance dates and times are February 15th through 24th, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 pm, and Sundays at 2:00 PM, inside the Bicentennial Park Theatre. About the play* - World War II has just ended, and crude, shady scrap metal king Harry Brock heads to Washington, D.C., determined to take the town by storm and buy his way to a business-friendly Amendment. With bitter, corrupt lawyer Ed Devery and meek Senator Hedges by his side, he is confident in his ability to prevail. Harry's only liability is the socially inappropriate behaviour and outrageously ignorant remarks of his showgirl lady friend, Billie Dawn, a beautiful woman with a deceptively simple facade. Charmed by Paul Verrall, the investigative reporter who is sent to interview him, Harry hires the upright, idealistic newspaper man to educate Billie, hoping that she will acquire enough class and social polish to prevent embarrassment. But little does Harry realize that underneath the ignorance and apathy, Billie is an intelligent woman with a vigorous sense of right and wrong, who has just been waiting for a kind and sympathetic teacher to blossom into an empowered and informed person. As Billie and Paul tiptoe towards a romance, and Billie absorbs Paul's knowledge and ideals, she begins to question the ways Harry has been using her -- especially her position as a silent partner, who owns 160 of her own junkyards and has signed off on hundreds of documents, completely unread. In Garson Kanin's pointed and hilarious Born Yesterday, personal and political oppression is exposed and outwitted in the intellectual rebirth of the iconic "dumb blonde", Billie Dawn, who ultimately stands up to Harry Brock's violent intimidation and shuts down his shady bid for governmental cooperation. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for seniors, students, Joliet Drama Guild, AACT, or ITA Members, $12 for Sustaining members of the JDG. World War II has just ended, and crude, shady scrap metal king Harry Brock (Matt Dodge of Channahon) heads to Washington, D.C., determined to take the town by storm and buy his way to a business-friendly Amendment. With bitter, corrupt lawyer Ed Devery (Mark Mason of Shorewood) and meek Senator Hedges (Ted Holste of Plainfield) by his side, he is confident in his ability to prevail. Harry's only liability is the socially inappropriate behavior and outrageously ignorant remarks of his showgirl lady friend, Billie Dawn (Nicole Kaestner of Joliet), a beautiful woman with a deceptively simple facade. Charmed by Paul Verrall (Jason Hilton of Shorewood), the investigative reporter who is sent to interview him, Harry hires the upright, idealistic newspaper man to educate Billie, hoping that she will acquire enough class and social polish to prevent embarrassment. In Garson Kanin's pointed and hilarious Born Yesterday, personal and political oppression is exposed and outwitted in the intellectual rebirth of the iconic showgirl, Billie Dawn, who ultimately stands up to Harry Brock's violent intimidation and shuts down his shady bid for governmental cooperation. The rest of the ensemble cast includes Eddie Brock (Dan Jagodzinski of Naperville), Mrs. Hedges (Annika Dockstader of Crest Hill), Helen (Leanna Melville of Plainfield), The Assistant Manager (Lemonie Stewart of Joliet), A Bellhop and a Bootblack (Charles Lovett of Joliet), Another Bellhop and Waiter (Justin Karcz of Joliet), A Barber (Tom Novotny of Joliet), and A Manicurist (Jan Novotny of Joliet). The play is being directed by Suzanne Kaspar of Plainfield with Assistant Director Michelle Heermann of Shorewood. Set design by Marty Kaspar of Plainfield and Joe Mackinac of Shorewood. Reels at the Rialto - "Bohemian Rhapsody"
Mar. 14, 2019 - Mar. 14, 2019 , 7:00 PM
The new movie series, Reels at the Rialto, is a nod to our Vaudeville movie palace past, and will feature past and recently past movies for the entire family, shown on the retro movie screen by the new projector, generously donated by the Rialto Square Volunteers, inside the beautiful Rialto Square Theatre. Doors will open at 6pm, all showings start at 7pm. Tickets available day-of or in advance at the Rialto Square Theatre Box Office. No online ticket sales. March 14th - "Bohemian Rhapsody" Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

Frida Kahlo's Garden Exhibition
Now - Mar. 16, 2019 , T, W, F, Sat 10:00AM-4:00PM, Th 10:00AM-7:00PM, Sunday 12:00PM-4:00PM
Learn how nature and Mexican culture nurtured one of the most significant artists of the 20th century when "Frida Kahlo's Garden" opens Tuesday, January 29, at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon. The free, all-ages exhibition will run through Saturday, March 16. Exhibit hours will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Thursdays, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; and Sundays, noon-4 p.m. The stop at Four Rivers will be the first in Illinois and the second nationwide for the exhibition on its five-year tour of the country. Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) created some 250 paintings and drawings during her lifetime. This traveling exhibition explores how Kahlo's garden, the diversity of plant life in Mexico, and the rich cultural history of the country nourished the artist's creativity. "The exhibit takes a fresh look at Frida Kahlo's art by examining her appreciation for nature, which is something at the heart of the Forest Preserve District's mission," said Tina Riley, facility supervisor at Four Rivers. "Whether you are already a fan of Frida and her art, or you have never heard of her, this exhibit has something for everyone to learn and enjoy. We hope that visitors who attend the exhibition will be inspired to see the beauty of their own surroundings, both at home and in our preserves and open spaces." The exhibition consists of iconic photos of Kahlo and her home and garden, which were located at Casa Azul (Blue House) in Mexico City; reproductions of several of her paintings; information about native Mexican plants that were grown in her garden; a dress from the Mexican state of Oaxaca; examples of folk art collected by Kahlo and her husband, painter Diego Rivera; and information on Mexican culture, including traditional festivities, food and drink, and agricultural practices. Exhibition panel displays are in both English and Spanish. This exhibition is made possible by NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment for the Humanities. "Frida Kahlo's Garden" is adapted from the exhibition, "FRIDA KAHLO: ART, GARDEN, LIFE," organized by guest curator Adriana Zavala at The New York Botanical Garden. It was made possible with major funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, Karen Katen Foundation, The LuEsther T. Mertz Charitable Trust, MetLife Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, and Gillian and Robert Steel. It was adapted and toured for NEH on the Road by the Mid-America Arts Alliance. The exhibition is brought to the Forest Preserve through funding provided by The Nature Foundation of Will County. "We are fortunate to be able to bring an exhibit of this caliber to Will County and thrilled to offer it free of charge," Riley said. "I hope that everyone will take advantage of the opportunity to shake off their cabin fever this winter and come spend some time in 'Frida Kahlo's Garden!'" The Forest Preserve also has scheduled a series of programs that complement the exhibition.
